Meet The Burney Sisters

Meet The Burney Sisters. Two very talented musicians taking the world by storm. The crazy thing; they are only 10 & 13. We can’t wait to see where their music takes them. You can read the full interview below.

First things first, introduce yourself. Let the world know who you are, where you're from and how long you have been doing music.

E: I am Emma Burney from Columbia, MO. I'm a musician and started playing professionally at the age of 9.

O: I am Olivia Burney from Columbia, MO. I play ukulele and guitar in The Burney Sisters. I've been interested in music for most of my life and started writing original music when I picked up a ukulele at a garage sale for $1.

Where does your inspiration come from when making music?

E:  I often get inspired by the music of other bands.

O: My inspiration comes from different artists, phrasing, and things that I observe around me.

What genres of music do you find yourself listening to daily?

E: I like to listen bluegrass, alternative and folk mostly

O: I mostly listen to folk, punk, and psychedelic rock. Artists like The Avett Brothers, Shakey Graves, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill and The Beatles.

Can you walk us through what it's like when doing a live performance?

E:  It feels so great to have the crowd looking back at you and enjoying your music. I don't usually get nervous, I get more excited, just ready to perform!

O: I absolutely love performing, especially when the crowd interacts and sings our songs. It's just such an emotional experience because it baffles me that people appreciate our music as much as they do.

What is your favourite venue you have played and why?

E:  My favorite venue is the Blue Note because it has such a cool vintage theater vibe and the sound is really great!

O: My favorite venue so far is either The Grandel in St. Louis or The Blue Note. We had such a great time playing at The Grandel recently. I love the feel of the place because the room doesn't feel like your band is up on a pedestal away from the crowd like a lot of venues. The Blue Note just feels like home.

What drew you to music in the first place?

E: I wanted learn how to play and sing music at the same time. When my sister bought a Uke and learned how to play off of YouTube, I wanted to try as well.

O: My first inspiration musically was Adele because my mom was a big fan of her music and would play her all the time.

Are your recordings done in a professional studio or at home?

Both: We are currently recording in a professional studio called Gaslight. All of our recordings have been in professional studios.

Where can people listen to this new single?

Both: You can listen to our new single on most digital platforms.

When writing a song, do both of you write everything together?

Both: Olivia writes the lyrics and I help arrange the songs and add vocal harmonies and solos.

Are there certain things you do alone?

E: I add my instrumental skills and solos at times. I practice on my own time when we aren't rehearsing.

O: I write the lyrics and practice my instruments but we are working on collaboration with lyrics for a new song.

What is the story behind your new single Ocean Eyes?

O:  I wrote the song inspired by a picture captured of a friend of mine. His eyes reminded of the ocean and that's what started the concept of the song.

You are very young and talented so there is lots to look forward to. Where do you two want to go with music? (End Game) Are you looking to tour, record, write for others etc etc Everything?

E: I'm definitely looking to tour and connect with other artists and just gain respect in the music industry for our craft.

O: Our real goal is to play as many shows as we can, travel as much as we can, and collaborate with artists that inspire us as much as possible.
